For many years, the NEBOSH International Diploma has been recognized as a leading qualification in the field of health and safety in the UK and worldwide. It provides knowledge and expertise required for a successful career as a Safety and Health Practitioner.
What kinds of people take the NEBOSH International Diploma?
The NEBOSH International Diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH International General Certificate. It is designed to provide students with the expertise required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner, wherever in the world they may be working. It also provides a sound basis for progression to an MSc or more specialist study (for example, the NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management).
What are the benefits for employers?
Management of health and safety in the workplace is not only a legal obligation and a moral imperative; it also makes good business sense.
The International Labour Organisation estimated annual cost of occupational injury and ill-health to the world economy is 1 Trillion Dollars ($1,000,000,000,000).
Qualified health and safety professionals are assets to their organizations, reducing costs by preventing accidents and ill health of employees, without incurring unnecessary expense by over-reacting to insubstantial risks.
Courses leading to the NEBOSH International Diploma can be taken in a variety of formats and at a pace to fit around the needs of the business or student. Its unitized structure recognizes success as the student progresses. Its practical approach promotes the application of the knowledge acquired on the course to problem solving in the student's own workplace.
The NEBOSH International Diploma has been designed at a level equivalent to the NEBOSH National Diploma, which is set at level 6 under the UK National Qualifications Framework (NQF), developed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Although the NEBOSH International Diploma is a vocationally related award, the NQF permits comparison with academic qualifications. It is examined at the same level as the Level 6 National Diploma, which broadly equates to an honors degree-level qualification under the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ).
Is this qualification recognized?
On successful completion of the qualification, the Diploma holder may apply for Graduate membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the major UK professional body in the field of occupational health and safety (www.iosh.co.uk).
This qualification is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management. (www.iirsm.org).
Holders of the NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety may use the designatory letters "IDipNEBOSH" after their name and are invited to the annual NEBOSH Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the year following the successful completion of their award.
What does the qualification cover?
The NEBOSH International Diploma takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards, such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) "Guidelines on Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems" (ILO-OSH 2001). Knowledge of legal frameworks and cultural factors are an integral part of the study program.
The qualification is divided into four units, in which the first three units are further divided into a number of elements while the fourth unit is the practical application of workplace assignment:
- Unit IA: International management of health and safety
- Unit IB: International control of hazardous agents in the workplace
- Unit IC: International workplace and work equipment safety
- Unit ID: International application of health and safety theory and practice
More details on the contents of each unit can be found in the I-Dip. Syllabus at
How is it assessed?
The examinations are held twice each year, January and July, and are comprised of one 3-hour written paper session for each of the core units (A, B & C). Students must complete workplace-based assignments for unit D.
Students will receive a unit certificate for each unit passed. On successful completion of all units making up the NEBOSH International Diploma, students will receive the overall qualification parchment.
